With the help of many volunteers and developmentally disabled clients, the James L. Maher Center, a not-for-profit organization located on Aquidneck Avenue in Middletown, is starting to off load the first of 1,367 Christmas trees that it expects to sell in anticipation of a very Merry Christmas this year. The first shipment of trees trucked in from Bangor, Maine range in height between four feet and twelve feet arrived on November 21st. The second batch arrives the following week. As with other retail establishments, this holiday season is the major event of the year. The clients of the Center who work there year-round look forward to this season because it is so much fun for them, providing an opportunity to visit with customers from years past, and a chance to make new friends of people visiting the Garden Center perhaps for the first time. The trees represent the season; the smiling faces represent the spirit of the season.

If you are going to buy a tree this year, you could not do better than to buy one from the Maher Center. When you come in, ask for Eddie. He'll show you around. If you can, stop by on, Sunday, December 4th between 1 and 4pm, for our annual "open house" event. Warm apple cider and Holiday good cheer will be everywhere."

The Maher Center provides services and supports to hundreds of children and adults with developmental and physical disabilities, and just as meaningfully, provides peace of mind and hope to their families. It has a reputation of being well run and well managed, with staff dedicated to providing the highest quality of services. In the most recent year, close to 300 people participated in work opportunity programs; over 100 received residential services; almost 90 children and families benefited from Early Intervention; and literally thousands of people in the East Bay reached their destinations because of RIde transportation services. These services include a wide array of opportunities for people with differing abilities ... from Early Intervention for infants and toddlers, to support for people with disabilities who also experience the added complications of aging, such as Alzheimer's disease.
