Newport - Middletown, RI -
The James L. Maher Center - a not-for-profit organization - was recently awarded a grant from the Alletta Morris McBean Charitable Trust in the amount of $175,000. These funds will allow us to make significant upgrades and improvements to two of our group homes located on Carroll Avenue and Green End Avenue. The homes do not require extreme home makeovers; rather they require updates and maintenance that come from everyday living. Adequate and secure housing does more than fill a basic need -- it is the anchor in a world which is not always tolerant of people's differences. For people with disabilities, a safe and secure home provides the dignity and self-respect that is the cornerstone for social and economic success.

The Maher Center provides services and supports to hundreds of children and adults with developmental and physical disabilities, and just as meaningfully, provides peace of mind and hope to their families. It has a reputation of being well run and well managed, with staff dedicated to providing the highest quality of services. In the most recent year, close to 300 people participated in work opportunity programs; over 100 received residential services; almost 90 children and families benefited from Early Intervention; and literally thousands of people in the East Bay reached their destinations because of RIde transportation services. These services include a wide array of opportunities for people with differing abilities... from Early Intervention for infants and toddlers, to support for people with disabilities who also experience the added complications of aging, such as Alzheimer's disease.
