Fogarty Foundation Awards Grant to Maher Center for Food Service Training ProgramFor the second consecutive year, The John E. Fogarty Foundation of Providence has awarded a grant to the Maher Center to fund a program to teach culinary arts skills to some of our folks. The grant, written by Mea Simanski, provides for select college students to become 'lead chefs' in order to instruct our 'Maher chefs -in-training.' The trainees learn food service hygiene, food preparation and how to properly measure the ingredients that go into our great soups.
The first year of the program, David Coop, a Roger Williams University student provided the first 'taste' of culinary arts instruction, and 'set the table' for this fall's 'lead chefs', Rachel La Plante and Alexcia Bouressa (both students from Salve Regina University). They have added some new recipes, including a 'Tex-Mex' soup which includes red beans, rice, corn and some secret spices. We would like to thank The John E. Fogarty Foundation for their continued support of this innovative program. By Mea Simanski |

Each week, we make large quantities of soup, transfer it to 'thermovats' for
transportation and delivery to a local 'soup kitchen' to feed those who need
a hot meal every now and then.
