2012 Food Service Training Program

Our culinary instruction program is a weekly class that teaches people with developmental disabilities food service skills by making a variety of soups in quantity. The training soups are delivered every week to the McKinney Shelter in downtown Newport. Our clients participate in civic engagement and gain a sense of meaning and purpose by reaching out to others in this capacity.

This program is about people helping other people for a gentler and more compassionate world. Each person learns that he or she has the ability to make an impact in a positive way.

The Maher Center welcomes our third group of new college students to serve as program leaders. Corilyn Henault and Maria Lawrence from Salve Regina University have been trained to implement our grant-funded culinary arts program.

Two grant awards from the Fogarty Foundation plus over $1000 in private donations have kept this worthwhile program operating. Thank you to Brenda Dupont who helps coordinate client schedules, transportation, and training pay for our clients.
