On December 10th come to the first-ever Fort Adams Festival of Lights being held inside the fort walls! This All-Island Charity event, which supports the James L. Maher Center and the Fort Adams Trust, is being held in affiliation with Christmas in Newport. Set-up begins at 8 a.m. and gates open to the public at 10 a.m. Local businesses, schools, other non-profits, and families will be displaying their uniquely decorated Christmas trees. Each participant will be competing for a chance to win prizes in various categories. Come stroll the grounds and admire the trees in an enchanting North Pole setting. Hot soups, drinks and sweets from local businesses will be available to purchase. The entrance fee is $2.00 at the Fort Adams Gate. There will be plenty of free parking available.

The Maher Center provides services and supports to hundreds of children and adults with developmental and physical disabilities, and just as meaningfully, provides peace of mind and hope to their families. It has a reputation of being well run and well managed, with staff dedicated to providing the highest quality of services. In the most recent year, close to 300 people participated in work opportunity programs; over 100 received residential services; almost 90 children and families benefited from Early Intervention; and literally thousands of people in the East Bay reached their destinations because of RIde transportation services. These services include a wide array of opportunities for people with differing abilities... from Early Intervention for infants and toddlers, to support for people with disabilities who also experience the added complications of aging, such as Alzheimer's disease.

"It is community support at events such as this that enables us here at the Maher Center to continue to provide servies that enhance and enrich the lives of so many people with developmental and physical disabilities." - said Mea Simanski, event coordinator.
