As 2012 Opens and 2011 Draws to a Close,
New Horizons and New Opportunities Develop

As we start the new calendar year, we can look back briefly, but satisfied at the many accomplishments we shared during this past year. Most visible, of course, is the redesign and launch of our new web site which increasingly has become "the public face" of the Maher Center. Less obvious, but most important and reliable, has been the continued dedication of all of our staff toward the people we support which has become "the spirit" of the Maher Center.

As 2011 comes to a close, we reflect on a year of enormous business complexity and an ever-changing regulatory environment. Without a doubt, we have enhanced the visibility and recognition of our Center within our community. We have brought federal, state and local officials to visit us to personally see the work we do, and the benefits we provide to our clients and their families. We have made important strides toward developing additional sources of income to help support our activities in the future. We began our first-ever Capital Campaign this past year with the intention of generating much needed funds to maintain and improve our facilities and invited major foundations to visit and learn how they might be helpful to us.

Together with other agencies, our supporters, and members of the community, we encircled the State House to bring understanding of the severe impact that funding reductions have had on our ability to maintain services to those who need us.

While we may not have been able to achieve all that we may have been capable of, and I am sure that I have overlooked other accomplishments here, we have survived during a period of significant uncertainty, doing so because our team was able to successfully adapt to changing needs.

We know that our economic struggle will continue into 2012 and perhaps beyond. We also know that together - with each other's help and the help of our community of supporters - we will meet the challenges that arise as we, and our predecessors, have done now for nearly sixty years

The challenges we face persist and seem to grow even greater with each passing day. Yet, together, we continue our efforts to maintain the services we provide.

Fellow employees, thank you for being a part of our mission and for making the James L. Maher Center your professional home. The New Year will undoubtedly hold many new challenges as well as opportunities for each of us.

Families and members of our community, thank you for your support. Your generosity has touched the lives of so many people.

My hope for each of you and yours is this heartfelt wish for a new year that finds us all in good health and rewards all of our endeavors with peace, prosperity, and continued success.
