Integrated Employment Program
The principal mission of the Maher Center Integrated Employment Program is to provide employment opportunities to individuals with developmental difficulties.
The program is large and multi-faceted, operating enterprises ranging from a large commercial laundry, to food service, janitorial and housekeeping services.
Much of the work is done under government contracts as part of the federal AbilityOne Program which coordinates its activities with nonprofit organizations such as the Maher Center to provide employment for persons with a wide range of disabilities.
Northeast Linen and Laundry Service, for example, provides services to U.S. Navy facilities in Newport, RI, Groton, CT and Portsmouth, NH, to the Rhode Island Veterans Home, Bristol, RI, The RI State Police training academy and the Alton Jones Campus of the University of Rhode Island. The company currently processes more than 850,000 pounds of laundry each year, while continuing to add capacity and improve its process to reduce its environmental impact.
The program also provides janitorial services to the Naval War College, Newport, RI, housekeeping services to the healthcare facilities at the Newport Navy Base, and foodservice at two locations in Fort Adams State Park in Newport, as well as courthouses throughout the state.
Clients in the Integrated Employment Program receive comprehensive support and supervision on the job, including an individual job coach. Many also rely on the Center's Transportation Services for their daily commute.
Well over 100 Maher Center clients are employed within the various facets of the Integrated Employment Program.
