Early Intervention

early intervention, treatment and care for disabled children The James L. Maher Early Intervention Program promotes the growth and development of children from birth to three years old who may have a developmental delay, while providing support to their families.

The goal of the program is to identify and work with developmental issues early, so that children can develop to their fullest. The Early Intervention Program is a state/federal program that is offered at no cost to families.

Potential developmental problems may be identified at birth, or as a child grows. Parents often become aware that the child is experiencing a delay in walking or talking, that he or she may have sensory issues or exhibit behaviors that interfere with their development.

This is when the Early Intervention Program can help. Parents may contact the Center directly or may be referred by physicians, health care providers or day care providers.

Ours is a broad-based, holistic team approach based on professionals and family working as a team. We work with both the child and the family in the child's "natural environment" wherever that child is during the day. We help families to understand their child's strengths, abilities and needs and to learn activities that families can use to prompt their child to progress in their development.

The Early Intervention Program services include:

  • Comprehensive evaluations to assess speech and language, fine and gross motor skills, learning skills and behavior.
  • Development of an individual family plan.
  • Appropriate treatment such as speech therapy, occupational therapy, behavior management, etc.
  • Provision of family support and coaching.
  • Co-ordination with other programs, WIC, early care providers, etc.
  • Transition plan at age 3 if continued services needed.

Our professional staff includes Early Childhood educators, social workers, nutritionists and therapists, all state-certified, highly-qualified and dedicated to making a positive difference.

If you're concerned about your child's development or want to learn more about our Early Intervention program, please contact: Deb Shears, Interim Director, Early Intervention, (401) 848-2660, deborahs@mahercenter.org
